In just a couple of weeks The Blue Light and myself are going to showcase a few of the lasting local songwriters from the great scene of Lubbock. I honestly owe much of who I am as a songwriter to these guys and want to pay it forward on these three evenings this summer. Each one of these individuals has written songs that have affected me and so many others on the South Plains and its time to honor the men and the music! Songs will be played, embellished stories shared, but most of all you can listen to living history of Lubbock music. These are my friends and they are true Legends. 03/16/2016 - Famous Campisi's Italian Restaurant comes to Lubbock

Lubbock will soon have a new Italian restaurant. Campisi’s Italian Restaurant is expected to open in this summer.

The oldest family-owned Italian restaurant in Texas will be located at 82nd and Quaker, near Subway and Starbucks.

The first Campisi’s opened in Dallas in 1946. One Campisi’s is location near SMU on Mockingbird Lane.

Campisi’s currently operates 10 locations in Dallas-Fort Worth and the Lubbock location will be the first outside of DFW.

The current CEO of Campisi’s, David Campisi, is a 1992 Texas Tech graduate.

03/16/2016 - Two of Three Country Radio stations Drop in Ratings in Fall 2015 Ratings

It seems that overall, the country music formats in the Lubbock radio market were the losers in the Fall 2015 Market ratings period just released. The report is conducted twice yearly in the Spring and Fall by Nielsen radio Audience Research Company.

The 2015 Spring ratings leader and country format giant, KLLL lost its top ratings spot to KBTE, 104.9 The Beat, a rhythmic CHR music format. KLLL had held the top spot in 3 of the last 4 rating periods since 2014. The results were published by ratings.radio-online.com.

The other big loser was KJDL, The Red Dirt Rebel. It had been climbing slowly over the past two years and in the Spring of 2015 reached a 3.5 quarter hour share (AQH) rating. This fall, the Texas country music station took an unprecedented dive and scratched (0) with not enough listeners to post a AQR rating. During that rating period, the FM 105.3 station went from an all music only morning drive to a talk heavy morning show that featured Dave Walker, Tommy Turner (on a phone line) and a college intern.

The third country format KQBR, Lonestar 99.5 fared better this ratings period. They jumped from 11^th place in the radio market to 8^th with a 4.6 AQR rating. A 1.1 increase from the Spring 2015 rating period.

The profile contains a quarter hour share (AQH) rating -- the average number of persons, ages 12+, who listened during any average quarter hour from 6am to midnight, Monday through Sunday in the Metro Survey Area.

02/21/2016 - Kerns: Vasquez adds three Listening Room concerts this year at LHUCA

The news in the Lubbock live music scene is that singer-songwriter Junior Vasquez hopes to expand his Junior's Listening Room concept to other markets. But first, here in Lubbock he is adding a second concert venue other than the already highly successful Caprock Winery series.

Vasquez has always wanted to establish a music entertainment atmosphere for local musical artists and concerts without a night club setting. A place where music enthusiasts go to simply listen to the performer and his music.

Now, the LHUCA will be featuring a series of live shows under this concept.

01/27/2016 - The Beach Boys Invade Lubbock

The Day has been set for the Beach Boys Concert at the City Bank Coliseum as March 7, 2016.

Brian Wilson has announced a 2016 world tour to celebrate and perform the iconic album Pet Sounds for a final time, in honor of its 50th anniversary.

Originally released on May 16, 1966, Pet Sounds is universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time. With more than 70 dates being confirmed, and several previously announced dates selling out in record time, Wilson and his band will be joined by former bandmates Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin when they kick off the tour this Spring.

Concert stops include dates in Australia, Japan, United Kingdom, Spain, Israel, and Portugal followed by a full U.S. tour later this Summer and Fall.

Fans can expect a live performance of Pet Sounds in its entirety, as well as top hits and fan favorites spanning his 54-year career with The Beach Boys and as a solo artist.

Ticket presales begin January 27 with the official onsale January 29 in most markets. Additional dates and special events to be announced.

The event will be held at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center on the Texas Tech campus near the corner of 19th Street and University Avenue. The Heart Ball is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., with a seafood dinner and a silent and live auction at 7:45 p.m. The Open Your Heart Appeal will begin with dancing immediately following.

Lubbock: On Saturday February 20th at 7:00pm, classical music will be coming to J&B Coffee’s “Back Room”. In a casual and relaxed atmosphere, internationally-recognized cellist Steuart Pincombe will play a program entitled ADAPTATION, featuring virtuosic pieces from the earliest to latest music for solo cello without the endpin (1689-1875).

Three different bow styles (baroque, transitional, and “modern”) will be used to sample works by Gabrielli, Bach, Duport, and Piatti. The concert is part of a year-long tour of the country called Music in Familiar Spaces, bringing the highest level of classical music performances to new spaces.

The concert will start at 7:00pm and the audience will be invited to order drinks and food from the cafe throughout the performance.

One of the aims of the Music in Familiar Spaces tour is make classical music accessible to a wide and varied audience. This is accomplished not only by performing in familiar, comfortable and untraditional spaces, but by presenting programs that invite the audience to experience the music in a new and engaging way.

Don’t expect a normal classical music concert! Audience members are also asked to “name-their-own-ticket-price”, paying only what they can afford and what they believe the concert is worth.

(LUBBOCK, Texas) – For the sixth consecutive year, Amigos will host its semi-annual health fair at four stores in the Lubbock and Amarillo areas this Saturday, Jan. 6.

All activities are open to the public and free of charge, as part of the store’s commitment to help guests make healthy living a part of their everyday lives.

Pharmacy members and dietitians will be on hand to provide guests with blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings, body mass index (BMI) calculations and healthy weight education.

Every guest who completes the screenings will be entered into a drawing to win a DeWalt drill. Also, guests will receive handouts and sunglasses to raise awareness about sun safety for the start of summer.

As you may well know, last Monday was our songwriter host Benton Leachman's last Monday hosting our Monday Singer/Songwriter nights.

Today we are very happy to announce that Jerry Serrano will take over as our Songwriter host for the future. Jerry is a very accomplished musician and songwriter. He was the winner of the 2014 Bluelight Spring Singer/Songwriter Competition and is a regular on the Monday night Songwriter nights.

We are extremely lucky to have had songwriters such as Brandon Adams, Kenneth O'meara, Red Shahan all as Songwriter hosts in the past. We can now add another great, Benton Leachman, to the list of alumni's.

Thanks again Benton for doing such a great job with the nightly gatherings and the Songwriter competitions! We are looking forward to this next year with Jerry. The Songwriter nights are in good hands folks!

Pancho Clos who is Santa Claus cousin will be arriving in Lubbock on Sunday, December 20th at Maggie Trejo SuperCenter. He will be departing the Firehouse which is located at 1719 Buddy Holly Avenue at 1 pm at 1:15 pm he will be escorted by a Caravan of bikers and car clubs to the Maggie Trejo Center which is located on Amherst & Gary Avenue in the Arnett Benson area. Pancho Clos plans to give out toys and bags of fruit and candy to the kids who come out to welcome and visits him. Pancho Clos will be riding in a Hummer provided by Reagor/Dykes Auto Group.

The “Pancho Clos” project is sponsored by the American GI Forum and co-‐sponsored by the Community Foundation of West Texas. This project originated here in Lubbock in 1971 by three members of the American GI forum, the late Bidal Aguero, the late Gus Medina and the late Jesse Reyes all from Lubbock. The project has been a big success and now we have additional 100 volunteers from the Lubbock Hispanic Police Association, Solitos Car Club, Los Carnales La Familia Bikers Club, Girl Scouts Troop #6073, Lubbock Patriots Baseball.

SLATON – 46th Annual Sausage Festival and Oktoberfest – October 17 & 18
For 46 years now, a secret-recipe German sausage has been served in Slaton at Saint Joseph Hall.

Those 46 years of German sausage-making will culminate in a feast on Sunday, October 18, when the Saint Joseph Sausage Festival and Funfest is held there once again. Dinner is served at Saint Joseph Hall – 21st and Division (FM 41) Streets, Slaton – from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The main menu consists of German sausage made by St Joseph parishioners, Knights of Columbus Council 2571 grilled chicken, homemade German potato salad, green beans, and homemade cakes and bread.

Adult plates are $10.00 and children’s plates are $6.00. Take-out plates will be available at the south side of the hall.

Funfest, Sunday, October 18th, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., will be celebrated at Saint Joseph School. The Funfest includes silent and live auctions, bingo, games, music, food, quilt show, rock wall and spider climb, country store, a mini-bazaar, and raffles for quilts, electronics, United groceries, a cedar chest, and more.

Sausage (cured and vacuum sealed) will be sold by the pound at Saint Joseph Hall on Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Six years have passed since BREAKING BENJAMIN released their last album—2009's Dear Agony—but one listen to their new album, Dark Before Dawn, and it becomes clear that time away from the music world hasn't caused them to lose a step. If anything, the sound is more invigorated, energetic, and purposeful than ever. Appearing on the album with Burnley are guitarists Jasen Rauch (RED) and Keith Wallen (Adelitas Way), bassist Aaron Bruch and drummer Shaun Foist (Picture Me Broken.) The result is simultaneously vintage BREAKING BENJAMIN and yet decisively more cohesive.

Over the past decade BREAKING BENJAMIN has achieved worldwide success through their chart-topping music, their electrifying live performances and in the process amassed a sizeable and diehard fan base (over 5.7 million likes on Facebook, 220,000+ followers on Twitter.) And, it's the fans that ultimately fuels Burnley. "The band has always really been about the fans to me," says Burnley. "That's who comes first to me, and that's what it's all about. Early in 2007, producer Rob Cavallo asked Shinedown frontman Brent Smith about his goals for the band's new album. Smith didn't hesitate.

"I said, 'You know what -- when I'm dead and gone, when everybody in this band has passed or what have you, I want the world to remember this as a record that needed to be made, and that there was a reason for it,' " Smith says. "That was the motivation behind this album."

"And part of the reason it took so long to make!"

Welcome then to THE SOUND OF MADNESS, Shinedown's third album -- and the Florida rockers' boldest effort to date. Like its two predecessors, 2003's Platinum LEAVE A WHISPER and 2005's Gold US AND THEM, THE SOUND OF MADNESS offers a brave and unsparing look into the soul and psyche amidst a fierce musical attack that, even in its quieter moments, vibrate with the passion, energy and focus of a band with high-minded ideals and limitless ambitions.

Smith and company began the recording process for THE SOUND OF MADNESS with the formidable task of following up two massively successful albums that yielded a staggering seven consecutive Top five rock and alternative radio hits that included "Fly From the Inside," "45," the chart topping "Save Me," and a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," along with a reputation as a hot live band with an insatiable appetite for the road. However, after one listen, it's clear that the band didn't shrink from the task. Where THE SOUND OF MADNESS differs most is in its growth; it's the product of a group that has developed an even clearer vision for how it wanted to impact an audience.

"Lyrically, these songs are the most blunt that I've ever written," says Smith, who formed Shinedown with drummer Barry Kerch in 2001 in Jacksonville, Fla. "I feel that on this record I wrote what a lot of people want to say, but they just don't know how to say it -- not that I should tell anyone how to live their lives, but I've had these experiences and these thoughts that are in my head. And I can't believe I'm the only one who feels the way I do. So I just tried to express that in the most artistic and the most honest way I possibly could."

NOTHING MORE

There are a lot of bands who claim to wear their hearts on their sleeves, but for Texan quartet Nothing More that sentiment could scarcely be more literal. "When we first started, we branded ourselves on the arm after each year of touring, so we've all got these scars now, reminding us of the commitment we made to each other," confides frontman Jonny Hawkins. To say that this is a band who are dedicated to their cause would be to understate the case somewhat.

Hailing from San Antonio, Nothing More is a four-headed musical hydra that runs on frenetic passion, unswerving DIY spirit and relentless sonic experimentation. Part schizoid System Of A Down weird-isms, part Mars Volta-esque prog rock freak out, part effortless pop nous, they seamlessly barrel from churning headbang to skyscraping chorus and back again in the blink of an eye. Capable of bombastic bounce that hits as hard as an uppercut to the jaw when they fancy it, the boys from The Alamo City are equally able to dial down their bluster into deft moments of crystalline beauty when the mood takes them. It's a gut-punching blend made all the more powerful by a keen lyrical sophistication and philosophical undertone which both belies their years and marks them out from their contemporaries.

Forming initially as Middle school kids whose aspirations were as serious then as they are now, Nothing More's early development took place against a backdrop of suburban boredom and rabid musical obsession. Having tasted the addictive elixir of rock 'n' roll the band realized they were at a crossroads when they reached college age. "Everyone was telling us to stay in school," admits Hawkins "but for us that would have been settling. Having a plan B is a recipe for failure. We decided that we had to ignore everyone's advice and totally dedicate ourselves to being in this band."

And dedicate themselves they did. From fixing up their first tour van out of a derelict, raccoon infested RV to making their own stage rigs for their impassioned live show, the quartet literally built everything they have from the ground up. Those first tours, the ones that wrought the aforementioned scars, were formative in more ways than one. As the four young men saw and experienced more of the world, their spiritual and philosophical outlook began to evolve. "That period of growth was a real struggle for us individually and collectively," confirms Hawkins "but it made us a lot more open to other ideas and gave us a deeper faith in our own instincts. I think that reflects in our music."

The drips of those new ideas eventually became a flood and the narrow lens of the western paradigm they were born into was soon replaced with a more holistic world view, striking a balance between rationalism, empiricism and their own intuitions. It's the journey to find truth that has enabled them deal with the existential and the personal in equal measure, and, more importantly, rendered them a band with something to say and no fear of saying it.

"There's an old adage which goes 'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.' That is basically what we are about," intones the singer. "It's not about us ramming our views on religion, or philosophy, or politics down anyone's throats - it's about providing the opportunity for people to explore things themselves and challenging their reality."

That Nothing More have undergone a spiritual awakening of sorts ought not to distract from the fact that, in the live arena, they are absolute animals. Raw aggression crashing alongside precise riffing, thunderous bass and nigh on tribal percussion to jaw-dropping effect on a nightly basis. The dictionary definition of 'get in the van and play until you're dynamite live', they've grown through the grassroots by dripping blood sweat and tears across America, challenging the stereotypes of what you might think a band like this can incorporate into their show. Four way drum battles? Three members playing one bass guitar? These guys push the limits in more ways than one.

Nothing More are that rarest of things, a band with the heart, the soul, the brains and the guts to capture your heart and spark your mind. A new generation of rock stars who are unconcerned with fabricated notions of how and where they might fit in or what the hottest trend is, but simply focused on making honest, passionate art with real intent. "We want to be a church for people who don't believe the things that churches believe," concludes Hawkins. "We want to connect people and connect with people." And what better way to do that than with uncompromising music built on uncompromised principles, fought for and earned the hard way. Nothing More? Accept nothing less.

Flux Pavilion

Flux Pavilion is a one man orchestra! With the ability to Sing and play a large variety of instruments it's obvious that music comes naturally to him. Since first sitting down at a keyboard at the age of six his dream has been to make music that he loves and perform it to people who love it just as much.

Flux Pavilion AKA Joshua Steele has always been influenced by hard hitting dance music in everything that he does and it was only a matter of time before he found his own sound in the dance industry. in early 2008 Dubstep lit this internal fuse and he hasnt been the same man since.

Influenced by the likes of The Prodigy,Basement Jaxx and dubstep pioneer Rusko, Flux loved the high energy madness that dance music was capable of and set about making some of his own in the form of dubstep. Already adept with production skills he was soon off the starting block and his tunes were in swift circulation on the dubstep forum and were becoming a familiar name in the scene. What started of as a bit of experimentation soon became clear that Flux has definitely landed on his feet with the dubstep sound.
Before long labels were banging at his door itching to release his music so he decided that the world was ready for a bit of Flux Pavilion! Signing tunes to Rottun, Shift, XS Records, Stupid Fly and Dubmented beats and working with artists such as Datsik and Trolley Snatcha, his tunes were dominating the charts and starting to receive alot more interest from the big boys.

Ntype featured his track 'fucking noise' on his rinse mix cd and not content with that then signed flux's track 'Meathead' to his label wheel and deal. This was a massive look for flux and got his name out there to all the Dj's: Rusko, Hatcha, Plastician, Caspa, Skream. Soon enough no club was safe from one of Flux's bangers and the bookings came flying in all over the UK and Europe.

While his career flourished Flux and childhood Friend Doctor P had also been working on some stuff together. They teamed up with Legendary DJ and drum and bass pioneer DJ Swan-e and Earl Falconer of UB40 and formed the infamous Circus Records. With his own platform for dubstep Flux began to imprint the scene with his sound and was quickly becoming one of the main players in dancefloor dubstep family. His track Voscillate Received 'Track of the Week' on Rusko's radio one takeover which even featured his own vocals and more to date his forthcoming single "I can't Stop" has just received world record of the week by Radio 1's Zane Lowe.

Well known for his high energy performances and smashing anthems Flux is now performing all over the globe, and further tours are confirmed for next year in the U.S, Canada and Australia.

NGHTMRE

NGHTMRE hit the dance scene like a sweet dream releasing tracks at a frenetic pace since he got here a year ago. The 24 year old's remix of Showtek's "We Like To Party" with Slander has been championed by the likes of Diplo, Carnage and DJ Snake to name a few and garnered almost 5 million plays online. Soon after the releasing the remix of Showtek, NGHTMRE signed with Hashtag
JukeLife Management (Nadia Ali, Slander, Meaux Green, Bobby Puma, etc) who in turn quickly signed him over to Steve Gordon at Circle Talent (Carnage, Flux Pavillion, Datsik, Excision, Morgan Page, Yellow Claw, etc). A master of sound design helps make every track fresh but with very distinct drops, NGHTMRE's remixes of Victor Niglio's "Jiggy," Elliphant & Skrillex "Only Getting Younger",
Jumo Daddy's "Black Horse" have been rinsed by Flux Pavillion, Borgore, Snails, Adventure Club, Bro Safari to name a few. Along with these records being club bangers, they are also three of five which charted Top 3 on the Hype Machine tastemaker charts, further establishing himself as someone who's jams are equal part melodic and high energy. Earmilk.com even went as far to dub him "Skrillex
2.0." With releases on Ultra Records, Mad Decent, Wind Up Records, Play Me Records, and Circus Records, things are only getting started for young NGHTMRE. Cultural awareness through art helps to build confidence and understanding of culture. As such, for the fourth year the West Texas Latino Artist Art Show & Día de Los Muertos Celebración organized by Los Hermanos Familia and sponsored by Latino Lubbock Magazine.

The event will showcase the work of Latino artist, offer a cultural experience through local performers – traditional and modern; hold a unique Día de Los Muertos cake decorating contest; offer products from participating vendors; as well as provide children’s activities that offer cultural understanding.

AUSTIN, Texas, May 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The tenth Annual Texas Heritage Songwriters' Association (TxHSA) Hall of Fame Awards Show will take place Sunday, February 21st, 2016 at ACL Live at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin, Texas.

In collaboration with both the TxHSA and The Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, Texas songwriting troubadourRobert Earl Keen announced a new class of inductees during the Key West Songwriters Festival last week. The TxHSA will honor the late Roy Orbison, Joe Ely, J.D. Souther and Will Jennings in 2016.

These artists join past inductees, who embody the spirit of Texas and its distinctive culture through songwriting, such asKris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, and many more. Every year, one person is also recognized for their support of the songwriting community with The Darrell K Royal Texas Music Legend Award.

Lubbock's very own Joe Ely's new album will be released in September. West Texas fans will find much to relate to with his new opus. Here is a bio of Ely and Panhandle Rambler.

Panhandle Rambler is Joe Ely back home album, returned to the always dusty, perpetually windy, generally arid, frequently smoldering, and seemingly barren landscape around Lubbock where he grew up and first began playing music.

A place that has hosted generations of dry land farmers and wildcatters. It’s where Joe found his calling as a writer and performer. First located that unmistakable voice. Learned to carry himself upright and open, to move with determination.

In the rock’n’roll era, the vast spaces of west Texas have been filled with great music. Joe Ely stands in a tradition born out on these gritty plains. It includes Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker, Guy Clark, Delbert McClinton, Don Walser, Terry Allen, Lloyd Maines, his daughter Natalie Maines, and Joe’s enduring musical partners, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

It is a land where you can see for miles and miles and miles. Only those who don’t know it find it barren. For it’s full of stories if you know where to seek them. And it has customs and amusements all its own. Even the forever dipping oil wells have their role.

“In high school, we used to get somebody to buy us a six pack and go out there to the fields and ride the front part of those oil pumps all night long,” Joe remembers.

Now, Ely lives in Austin and spends much of his life on the road. But when

he’s accumulated enough song ideas, Lubbock is where Joe heads. “Somehow, just driving for hours down those country roads is still the best place for me finish my songs.”

Panhandle Rambler is one of the most personal albums Joe Ely’s ever made. It brings forth this terrain, the spirited people it produces and that special sense of destiny, be it terrible or glorious, that its very vastness creates. “Wounded Creek” starts the album with what you might call a Western fantasy, except that the “bushes and the brambles,” the traffic light, the stray dog and the cold wind are all completely brought to life.

“Sometimes, when I was a kid, you’d look outside and the only things you’d see would be these huge radio towers, must have been fifty of a hundred feet tall, just swaying in the wind,” Joe said. “Wonderin’ Where,” perhaps Panhandle Rambler’s most beautiful melody, pays tribute to those trembling towers, the railroads which carried other things equally unimaginable distances, the “cross between a river and a stream” where he played, and the dreams and nightmares that flitted across that kid’s mind and heart, and the loneliness of bearing such secrets. If it is possible to write a love song for a place, this is one of the great ones, “trying to find a verse that’s never been sung to hearts that need relief.”

“Here’s to the Weary” is the story of all the greatmusical refugees, from

Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills and Muddy Waters to the rockabillies—Buddy Holly,

Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, the shadows of the others—who soothed our “weary and restless souls” with nighttime musical magic.

It’s also typical of all the songs on the album. The place doesn’t necessarily always win, but, as in “Magdalene” and “Coyotes are Howlin’,” it’s the one thing that carries a sense not so much of permanence as of inevitably. The two sides are fully summarized in the almost giddy “Southern Eyes” and the fatalistic “Early in the Mornin’.”

Of course, every Lubbocker album needs its legendary tales. Here that territory is

covered by “Four Ol’ Brokes,” which combines a hobo yarn with the ballad of

a gambling scam, and “Burden of Your Load,” in which true love triumphs over evil, if just barely, we hope.

Equally legendary, but true in every respect, is the closing song, “You Saved Me,” which is a love song to Joe’s wife, Sharon. The lyric never mentions her name, but no one who’s known Joe Ely longer than about a day could mistake her.

Legendary tales and legendary musicians. Panhandle Rambler, largely recorded in Austin, features some of the most respected local musicians: drummer Davis McClarty, guitarists Lloyd Maines and Robbie Gjersoe, Jeff Plankenhorm, and Gary Nicholson, bassist Glen Fukunaga. There were also Nashville sessions, with Music City’s usual superb playing, led by guitarist Gary Nicholson. Joe wrote all but two of the songs:

“Magdalene” by Guy Clark and Ray Stephenson, and “When the Nights are Cold” by his original Flatlanders sidekick Butch Hancock.

This is a classic Joe Ely album. It has moved me, every time I’ve heard it, with a

certain kind of awe. One reason is that, long before you hear “You Saved Me,” he put everything he has into telling the world about a place in the world, and through that, reaching his own emotional center. It’s beautiful and it’s inspiring.

More great entertainment comes to the Depot District as the summer entertainment begins to wind down. As the last show of the 2015 Lubbock Summer Showcase series, the Buddy Holly Center will bring Patricia Vonne - a talented and respected musical artist - to its outdoor stage on August 20th.

Patricia Vonne is an American singer and actress. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Vonne, born Patricia Rodriguez, moved to New York City in 1990-2001 to pursue her artistic ambitions. She worked extensively in Europe and America and was featured in national/international commercials, and film work. She formed her own musical band, which performed on the New York circuit from 1998-2001. She then relocated to her native Texas where she currently tours extensively in the U.S., Mexico and Europe.

She toured as a member of Tito & Tarantula, the band featured in the film From Dusk Till Dawn in 2002. Her song, "Traeme Paz", was featured in the film Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Her song "Mudpies and Gasoline" is featured in the Quentin Tarantino presented filmHell Ride. She is the sister of Angela Lanza, Marcel Rodriguez and Robert Rodriguez.^[1]

The city of Lubbock will host a Veteran's Resource Fair. This according to Nancy Neill of the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department. The event will not only offer information and resources available to military veterans, but will also will include free food and entertainment for the whole family. The day long event is hosted by the Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department and its Veteran's Committee.

Ms. Neill added that various groups are participating in this event, including veteran's organizations and other entities with which veterans can meet with. Lubbock National Bank will be offering free lunch and Walker Broadcasting Communications will be broadcasting from the live music and entertainment venue. A kid's play area with spider climbs, jumpers, face painting and other fun will be available. The Vietnam Museum at Texas Tech will have military surplus helicopters on display for anyone to see.

“This is an effort by the city of Lubbock, to assure that every citizen that is a military veteran has access to all the benefits and resources that they are entitle to.” Ms. Neill said

Lubbock is seeing great success with a new innovative concept taken upon by well known Lubbock musician Junior Vasquez. Junior's new Listening Room event is hosted each Thursday by Caprock Winery and has just completed its third week.

Each week has overwhelmingly attended, and actually the first week left many guests out of the listening room due to standing room only. (but, it was ok, there was wine and a great patio party atmosphere) Those inside, embraced the intimate atmosphere that the listening room offers between them and the performers.

Rather than being overwhelmed with the ambiance of a nightclub or club, the listening room offers the opportunity to be engaged with the musicians and their personal written material. The concept is the same as a house concert, taken on successfully by Paul Johnson of Hub City Music.

Junior and his wife Miki perform the first set with a wide range of acoustic music, then they introduce their featured artist to finish out the evening. Sometimes they join in and create something new and exciting.

The first week's guests were Andy Wilkerson and his daughter Emily. The next week Kenny Mains hosted the night due to Junior's prior commitment. Kenny performed his personal favorites then he introduced Ronnie Eaton, an award winning song writer and performer. This past week's guest artist was Caleb Jude Green.

Next Thursday May 21st for "Music Meets Wine" Justin Robinett and Jenni Dale Lord will be Junior's esteemed guests. They are two more of Lubbock's rising stars. The Food Trucks start serving at 6pm, Music starts at 7pm and goes till 9pm.

And did I mention great wine as well? Now - add a different food truck each week serving delicious food and it's worth a little country drive to 408-E. Woodrow Rd, for Junior's Listening Room.

Mother's Day

The modern American holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna’s mission was to honor her own mother by continuing work she started and to set aside a day to honor mothers, "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". Anna's mother, Ann Jarvis, was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

Due to the campaign efforts of Anna Jarvis, several states officially recognized Mother's Day, the first in 1910 being West Virginia, Jarvis’ home state. In 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother's Day she soon became resentful of the commercialization and was angry that companies would profit from the holiday.

By the early 1920s, Hallmark and other companies started selling Mother's Day cards. Jarvis became so embittered by what she saw as misinterpretation and exploitation that she protested and even tried to rescind Mother's Day. The holiday that she worked so hard for was supposed to be about sentiment, not about profit. Jarvis's intention for the holiday had been for people to appreciate and honor mothers by writing a personal letter, by hand, expressing love and gratitude, rather than buying gifts and pre-made cards.

Jarvis organized boycotts and threatened lawsuits to try to stop the commercialization. She crashed a candymakers' convention in Philadelphia in 1923. Two years later she protested at a confab of the American War Mothers, which raised money by selling carnations, the flower associated with Mother’s Day, and was arrested for disturbing the peace.

Jarvis's holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world.

Saturday May 2, 2015, beginning at 12:00 noon, we at the Mean Woman Grill are honored to have the Songbirds Concert, or as I like to call it, a vision of the future of Lubbock Music.

These are all students of Hannah Jackson’s prestigious Songbird Music Studio, and we’ve seen some of her students play before at the Grill and they really wowed the audience, Of course, Hannah and her pal Ray Epsinoza, a most excellent guitarist, will also be on stage at times.

Some of the girls are ex cactus cuties but they’re are mostly grown up now and they are awesome.

The group includes Andi Kitten, Madeline Powell, Alex Kitten, Winnie Kitten, Makenzie Patton, Tyler Jackson, Tatum Lowe and Jordan Lawrence. Of course they will be playing a range of music but they are sure to delight.

This is going to be a fun show.

Justin Robinett is a singer/songwriter and producer from Lubbock, TX. Justin has always been involved with music, but made his international debut in the fore-front of the YouTube cover market. His early success with Michael Henry received the attention of many online viewers. Since 2009, his channel has accumulated over 62 million views and more than 360,000 subscribers. His multi-talented background in music has allowed him to take on many “faces” throughout his YouTube career.

You will find Justin playing drumset, guitar, piano, and many more instruments in his videos (sometimes all at once). Recently, Justin has teamed up with manager/producer, Mark Carman. Together they will be releasing his first solo album “On Top Of The Covers” through Sony Red in early 2015. Justin and Mark plan to follow that up with his debut original album in late 2015. He will be joined by Celeb Jude Green and and James McDonald. This will be a must see concert. Very serious about that!

By Jimmy Dunn South Plains College Music program has been called the Julliard of Bluegrass by the New York Times, and Sterling Masat teaches Bluegrass at SPC. You do the math. He’s Very good! Sterling Masat is in his 3rd year of teaching bluegrass and acoustic music at South Plains College, and at 26, he’s completed a lot of items on the bucket list of a much older musician. After touring 43 states with his family band by 16 it always looked like Sterling would have a career in music. He went to South Plains College in 2009 and after completing his two years made the gutsy move to Nashville Tennessee with just what he could fit in his compact car. He found work there as a touring banjo player and played internationally at some of the world’s biggest acoustic music festivals as well as making his debut at the Ryman Auditorium. In the fall of 2012 he was asked to join the faculty of SPC and has been there ever since. He loves teaching musicians of all ages and seeing their success. Bryce Jordan is a musician who lives and breathes mandolin. He’s been playing since he could talk, and at only 19, that’s still longer than Obama has been president. He studied worship arts at LeTourneau and is currently focusing on bluegrass studies at South Plains College. He has played a plethora of festivals, church services and weddings as well as joining Rounder recording artist, the Queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent on stage.

Just by coincidence, we've got two different Catholic music ministers playing today, the great West Garza at 11:30am and this evening at 6:30pm, for the first time, Robert Lopez who will be playing along side Steven Shedd, a really fantastic Blues and R&B artist and a favorite at the Mean Woman Grill. I should point out that it really is just a coincidence that West Garza and Robert Lopez are music ministers. We book them because they are very talented music pros.

Anyone who'...s been to the Grill at lunch on a Thursday should know about West Garza. He grew up singing in choirs but that smooth voice to good use with classic rock and folk at the Grill. He often manages to belt out songs you used to love but somehow forgot about. There are always musicians around playing classic rock and folk, but somehow he finds music along a different path and he'll bring a smile to your face as he takes you back in time.

Steven Chadd is one of the best male vocalists in town, a great pianist, and often plays the Mean Woman Grill solo. If you've ever heard him then you know your in for a treat. He's a Levelland native who attended South Plains College's commercial music program and actually got his musical start in Church. I could sit and listen to him play for hours as a solo act, but this evening he teams up with Robert Lopez, another SPC graduate who accompanies him on guitar. I think our audience is going to be surprised at just how good a pro duo can be when they see the two of them together.

This is just good, clean family fun and it all comes together with some very delicious Americana food. We've got the best burgers you are likely to ever taste, mouth watering chicken fried steak and on the lighter side, new high end salads and soups. Bring the kids. They seem to always love the music at the Grill and for the younger ones we have coloring contests where we pick the best art every month.

04/21/2015 - Live Music by Jake Martin at the Mean Woman Grill

Jake Martin is a young songwriter with an old soul. His writing carries a pureness and a quiet integrity wrapped in the lonesome imageries of the heart of a true cowboy. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Martin now calls Texas his home.

“I graduated Oklahoma State University in 2007, ” says Martin. “I got a job, it was my first corporate job and it really wasn’t for me and I recognized it right off the bat. About three months into that, I gave it my two weeks and I packed up everything I own pretty much and headed in the direction of Luckenbach, Texas.

In early 2008, Jake packed up his Martin guitar and a suitcase with his destination in clear view. The move from Tulsa to Luckenbach was not only pre-determined but a date with destiny. Jake’s parents had been coming to the Texas Hill Country since the 70’s, and when Jake was a child they would take summer vacations to the hill country, always stopping in Luckenbach. At 15 years of age, Jake received Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Viva Terlingua” record. This recording would be his introduction to Luckenbach and the famous songwriters associated with the “Viva Terlingua” project. Ultimately, the Texas Hill Country would be the place where Jake would also write and release his very first album in 2010.

Luckenbach started out as a sabbatical type deal, I was going to start there and kind of work my way west and just explore I bit, I guess. But I got a job off the bat working on a ranch just down the road from Luckenbach and then with the music in the Hill Country, I’m still amazed by it. It’s my favorite kind of music, and I guess this is my home now. I’m happy here, I’m happy with my day work at the ranch, and with the music there are a lot of places to play, a lot of places to express yourself.”

If you have been through Luckenbach Texas in the past couple of years, chances are you may have seen him. Sometimes performing, sometimes listening, whenever he isn’t working or playing somewhere else, Luckenbach is where he’ll be. He’s become part of the fabric of Hill Country way of life. With a polite and respectful manner different than most young men and with absolutely no ego or an ounce of rudeness lingering anywhere in his demeanor, at first glance Martin seems young, innocent and untouched. But once he starts singing a song like ”Passin’ Cactus”, “Made To Be Free” or “Buzzards in The Pen”, the soulful depth of his music paints a picture of someone has deep reverence for life. Someone who holds secrets. And in those secrets is a wisdom the listener can only hope to grasp. The Texas Hill Country has welcomed him, and now we welcome him to Lubbock, the Hub of Texas Music.With Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings, The Eagles, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and many other distinctive movers and shakers of varying genres as role models, Jake has set his sights pretty high for himself. Jake has an instinctive knack for writing about and contrasting the natural world against man’s world. His style is his own. He tells stories. That is what Jake Martin does best. You can add and subtract the instrumentation and the result is the same. The stories are powerful. If you are a person who has lived in this world, you can identify with a lyric such as “all in a rush just to get nowhere” or “Concrete correction, it sure does get to me” or “I’m packed up to go and all I want to do is stay”.

No one can tell Jake’s stories better than he. Just when you think the song content might be a bit harrowing, (i.e., telling a story of buzzards in the pen, a recollection of a natural state of the Texas Hill Country and the daily ways of wildlife) Jake spins the story with a subtle understanding of the fact that there is something bigger than all of us….. making this world go ‘round. In this high tech world, Martin’s music brings the energy of the Cowboy spirit to the forefront. In the song “A Hundred Years Too Late”, he points out the beauty of life in a simpler time, and wishes he was alive then. But, then he wouldn’t be in the here and now reminding us of what really matters, when we need it the most.

Honorees consist of Wade Bowen, Butch Hancock, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines.

“Lubbock Lights: Celebrating the Musical Heritage of the South Plains” will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday (April 9) in the Allen Theatre in the Student Union Building on Texas Tech University's campus. This event will honor the wide musical heritage and creative legacy of the South Plains.

Honorees for this event are musicians Wade Bowen, Butch Hancock, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines. Two are Texas Tech alumni, three are from Lubbock and all have international followings.

The program will be a moderated group discussion of their creative process, punctuated with performances of their original music.

Bowen, a graduate of Texas Tech, has had two of his albums rise to the Top Ten among country records. Hancock is a Lubbock native and alumnus of Texas Tech who co-founded the band The Flatlanders and is widely considered to be one of the nation's most prolific songwriters. Hendrix is a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter with classical music training. Maines grew up just outside of Lubbock. Son of one of the original Maines Brothers Band, Lloyd and his brothers later formed the widely-acclaimed second version of the Maines Brothers Band. Before he became one of the nation's most respected producers, his legendary skills at the steel guitar helped power the first Joe Ely Band. He earned a Grammy for producing “Home,” the 2003 album by The Dixie Chicks.

Prior to the event honorees will be on campus meeting with professors, researchers and students and exchanging ideas about the creative process. Between 10:30 a.m. and noon on Wednesday (April 8), they will make presentations in individual Texas Tech classes. In addition to talking about their work, they will offer their insights into building successful careers in the arts despite coming from small-city backgrounds.

Easter Egg Hunts:

Hodges to host egg hunt at arboretum

Hodges Community Center is host to the eighth annual Easter Egg Hunt beginning at 10 a.m. March 28.

Families can take photographs with the Easter Bunny as well as participate in face painting and games before the hunt begins at 11 a.m. next door at the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum, south of Hodges Community Center, at 41st Street and University Avenue.

Thousands of eggs will be scattered throughout the arboretum grounds. Kids of all ages are invited to this free community event. Baskets are not included.

Buffalo Springs Lake Easter Egg Scramble and Spring Fair

Second Annual Beeping Egg Hunt scheduled for March 29

Alstrom Angels will host a Beeping Egg Hunt on March 29 at Maxey Park.

This will be the second year for the hunt, which includes beeping Easter eggs for blind children and blindfolds for sighted children to hunt them too.

The event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and is open to the public.

It will include continuous hunts throughout the afternoon, according to a press release from Alstrom Angels.

Maxey Park is located at 30th St. and Nashville Avenue.

March Madness 2015 is right around the corner, the time when bar specials are flowing and TV sets are blasting great the Men's College Basketball for two whole weeks.

This year the selections for the 2015 NCAA Div I Men's Basketball Tournament is March 15, 5 PM Central on CBS. The actuall Tournament starts with the first round on Tuesday, March 17 through March 18.

The seccond and third rounds are the 19th through the 22nd.

The regionals are March 26 through 29th.

02/23/2015 - Blue Light 2015 Spring Singer/Songwriter Competition

The storied Blue Light Spring Singer-Songwriter Competition dates were announced this week. This year will work similarly to previous years.

Previous Blue Light Singer-Songwriter Competition winners include: Kenneth O’Meara, Casey Berry, Daniel Markham, Zac Wilkerson, Danny Cadra, Amanda Goebel, Erick Willis, and most recently, Jacob Furr.

Here’s a quick run down on rules, guidelines, and important facts that you should know.

The BLSSSC will take place on four straight Mondays–three preliminary dates being March 30, April 06, and April 13–and the Finale on Monday April 20.

During those preliminary dates, 12 slots will be available for sign-up, along with five slots on a waitlist per night just in case one of those 12 can’t make it. From those 12 songwriters, three will advance to the Finale on April 20 in which they will compete against those who moved on as well.

The ultimate winner, along with first runner-up and second runner-up will be chosen on April 20. The prize package will be announced later this month.

As far songwriting rules go:

1. Each songwriter will be allowed two songs (Songs shouldn’t be longer than five minutes in length).

2. Each song must be an original. No covers.

3. Songwriters must provide copies of their lyrics for the judges prior to performance. If you do not bring advance copies, paper will be available.

4. Each songwriter must make their own arrangements with regards to instruments. (Bring a guitar, etc).

5. If and when you advance to the Finale, you will not need to perform again in the competition until the Finale.

Because Ransom Canyon is just East of Buffalo Springs Lake, the Ranch house on the island will serve hamburgers and hot dogs for the Buffalo Lakes fireworks show.

July 4th, 2014

This annual Independence day parade and bbq will be held on July 4th. The parade starts at 9:45 am and right after that the BBQ goes to 2:00 pm. The event is open to the general public. The cost per plate is $8 for adults and $5 for children. For the kids there will also be a bouncy house, sweets and pool.

The second show of this concert series for 2014 will be held at the Lubbock Civic Center Theater, 1501 Mac Davis Lane.

The concert will feature local talent performing country, pop nostalgia, soft classic rock, and patriotic music. The evening of music will begin at 6:00 with and an acoustic set and the show with the house band will begin at 7:00 PM on July 19, 2014

This live music concert will have a couple of patriotic spots, including a tribute to our military.

Featured performers will be:

Larry Allen, Steve Burrus, Lesley Carraway, Mike Carraway, Carly Durham, Ray Espinoza, Kaci Keltz, Darryl Lippe, Donnetta Lippe, Donnie Martin, Misty Martin, Bonnie McCrae, Barry Moffitt, Jason Newton, Jason Nutt, Johnny Richardson, Tom Slagle, Betty Smith, Keith Smith, Terry Westbrook, Brent Wheeler, Emily Wheeler, Blake Whitmire and Steve Winters.

07/01/2026 - Vuelta Del Llano Bike Races

LUBBOCK, TX (PRESS RELEASE) -- Lubbock Sports is excited to welcome the Vuelta del Llano Bike Races hosted by the Lubbock Monterey American Business Clubs (AMBUCS). The two-day event will be held on Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6.

The Vuelta del Llano is a three-event, two-day race, which will include a criterium race as well as a road race featuringBuffalo Springs Lake and Yellow House Canyon. The race will also include a challenging 10-mile time trial throughYellow House Canyon on the morning of Saturday, July 5. Participants can pay $95 to take part in all three races. Spectators are welcome to enjoy the event at no cost.

All of the proceeds from the Vuelta del Llano Bike Races will benefit the Lubbock Monterey AMBUCS, which provides AmTrykes to those who otherwise would not get to share in the joys of riding a bike. The organization also awards scholarships to therapy students.

“The fun and freedom of riding your own bike is something everyone should be able to enjoy,” Jobe Rodgers, event organizer, said.

The criterium race will be a 1.3-mile circuit held at the Lubbock Business Park on Saturday, July 5. The first groups will begin racing at 2 p.m. The top women’s category starts at 5:15 p.m. followed by the 3/4 Men race at 6:05 p.m. and the Pro/1/2 Men race at 7:15 p.m.

The road race will be held on Sunday, July 6, and it will begin and end at Buffalo Springs Lake. The Pro/1/2 race starts at 8 a.m. The participants will cover 73 miles during the race. Spectators will be able to enjoy the race from optimal viewing spots such as the limbs at Horseshoe Canyon, the north side of Yellow House Canyon and the start/finish line at Buffalo Springs Lake.

Lubbock Sports estimates the event will bring around $50,000 in economic impact to Lubbock.

Even though fireworks stands across Lubbock county are open for business. County officials announced in May that there will not be a burn ban in place during the 4th of July holiday, thanks to recent heavy rains. But even though there isn't a burn ban, officials want to remind everyone that fireworks are illegal within the Lubbock city limits.

06/25/2014 - Jay Boy Adams Returns to his Native Lubbock

Jay Boy Adams spent a number of years honing his craft playing in bands in Houston and then in Midland, Texas with noted bluesman Johnny Heartsman. In 1972 Adams landed an opening slot in Lubbock for ZZ Top, whose manager Bill Ham was impressed enough to recruit Adams as the group’s regular opening act.

After four years on the road with ZZ Top Adams hit the touring circuit in earnest again for the next six years, sharing concert bills with such artists as The Allman Brothers Band, Joe Cocker, Jackson Browne, Marshall Tucker Band, Bonnie Raitt, The Kinks and many others.

Throughout the 1970s into the early ‘80s Adams spent some 200 to 250 days a year on the road. But the grind of touring and pursuing his musical ambitions eventually took their toll, and he was also intent on being a good father and husband. So he put his guitar down, left the road and quit music. “When I walked away, I walked away,” says Adams.

Country star Lee Roy Parnell invited Adams to join him onstage at a show in 1997, and his songwriting muse and love for playing guitar and performing returned with a vengeance. He has since toured on George Strait’s 1999 Country Music Festival, headlined the Kerrville Folk Festival and also toured Europe as a special guest star with The Texas Tornados.

Following the 2007 release of The Shoe Box, he hit the road again as a special guest opening for Stephen Stills.

Adams has also joined the Southern rock supergroup Brothers of the Southland alongside such notables as Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie, Henry Paul of The Outlaws and Blackhawk, “Dangerous” Dan Toler of the Allman Brothers, Steve Gorman of The Black Crowes, Bo Bice of “American Idol” fame and other top players.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Lubbock will be a state-of-the art theater with eight screens. Each auditorium will be equipped with state-of-the-art Digital and RealD 3D projection (plus 35mm projection in select auditoriums). Texas Tech officials and Lubbock officials announced that Paul McCartney will play inconcert live in Lubbock at the United Spirit Arena.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning during in a joint Texas Tech and Lubbock news conference.

McCartney said, “At least the first 40 songs we (The Beatles) wrote were Buddy Holly influenced,” and now McCartney will give his first concert in the hometown of Holly on Saturday, June 14.

Mayor Glen Robertson said McCartney reached out and asked to play in Lubbock because of the Holly connection.

Nashville, TN – Emerging singer/songwriter, Ross Cooper, released his anticipated album, Give It Time, on March 18. Recorded at Mount Vernon Studios in Lubbock, Texas, and produced by Jon Taylor and Cooper himself, the album features eleven new tracks highlighting Cooper’s dynamic songwriting style and gritty, poignant sound. All songs were written by Cooper with the exception of one, which he co-wrote with Jeremy Drinkwine. You can listen to the full album HERE.

“I think my approach to this album is different from projects that I've worked before because I've lived more,” Cooper says, “and I hope listeners can tell that my writing has changed because of it. I finished tracking this album right before I moved to Nashville, so in a way it represents a huge life change.”

Songs like “Witches” show a depth in storytelling not often heard in a young twenty-something artists while “Running Away” has that je-ne-sais-quoi to it that definitely screams Americana. “Girl From The Diner” is as interesting a murder ballad you’re likely to hear anywhere while “Don’t Remember” is a melodic slice of melancholy.

All of these songs suggest an artist who is ready to take his place as one of America’s best singer songwriters but it’s the title track of GIVE IT TIME which suggests the potential for stardom. The percussive mid-tempo melody belies the befuddled heartache which permeates “Give It Time,” a song that demands you pay attention to each and every lyric, with the refrain of “what doesn’t kill us first, my friends, just give it time, give it time, give it time.”

As interesting and as his music is, Ross Cooper’s story may be even more interesting, if not unexpected. Born into rodeo family (it’s where his parents met), Cooper spent his life in the rodeo and, up until a few years ago, he had dual careers as both a professional Bareback Rider in the PRCA and as a musician. It took a knee injury for the storytelling singer/songwriter to decide where his true path would lead and fortunately, Cooper chose music.

In addition to critical adoration, Cooper’s peers have vocalized support of his music. William Clark Green had this to say about the talented singer/songwriter: "Ross Cooper is someone I call on for advice for songs. Great songwriter, great record, great friend."

There’s a rambler at the heart of Woody Pines, a rounder nestled into the heart of his music. It’s the kind of rambler that motored Robert Johnson’s car, the vagabond spirit that pushed Kerouac on frenetic road trips across the US, the aimless soul that rode trains with Woody Guthrie. This trickster character is the very core of American roots music, and Woody Pines knows it well. His songs are filled with these characters: wandering broken hearts, swaggering pimps, crusty hobos, but he himself has lived these stories.....

.....Woody’s journey has taken him from street corners and smoky bars to folk festivals and the Grand Ole Opry, but he started with Bob Dylan. As a child, unable to read music, he made up new tunes for the Bob Dylan songbooks around his house. Later, he hitchhiked with a friend to visit his heroes such as Pete Seeger, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Utah Philips. By the age of nineteen, he’d already played in forty-nine states. Since then he’s lived as a street performer in New Orleans, wandered the West Coast co-founding the legendary underground jugband The Kitchen Syncopators, set up home in a trailer in Asheville and now Nashville, and cut four solo albums full of his wickedly inventive musings on American roots music. His last album, You Gotta Roll, was lauded by No Depression as “old- time feel-good music done by a young master who clearly understands that this kind of music was always about having a great time,” and Pop Matters, who declared it “Vintage Americana Romp.”

With his brand-new, full-length album, Rabbits Motel, Woody Pines returns to the roads that have long inspired him, packing along his many inspirations, from Bill Haley to Leadbelly, Chuck Berry to Hank Williams, and Sam Cook to Doc Watson. True to form, most of the songs on the album are original, though we challenge you to tell us which ones just from listening. This is juke joint music, the kind of roadhouse songs that are made to get people up and dancing. With Rabbits Motel, Woody took the time to really use the studio to his advantage, bringing a much harder edge to his music. Still thoroughly grounded in the blues and rags of before, this album has a strong independent streak. The song “Hobo’s Bride” starts from a folk song foundation but winds up a kind of epic tale about young lovers. “Railroad Vine” speaks of long train travels while channeling a dusty Southwest vibe. The infectious opening song “Like I Do” bumps along like a pickup on an old dirt road, singing about shattered relationships. Unless you’ve actually traveled the backroads of America like Woody, or unless you’ve spent countless hours poring over old 78s learning mostly forgotten old songs, don’t try what he’s attempting here! The reason Woody can push the envelope the way he does is because he loves the music so much.

After reading this list you might be wondering “What are The South Plains Sessions?” They are an ongoing internet series produced by Kabletowava Films, a production company specializing in music videos, commercials, and films.

In the South Plains Sessions, artists are filmed performing 3-4 songs in a live and intimate setting, often their home. A certain portion of these performances are picked up by PBS’ (Cha nnel 5) weekly show 24 Frames, which is broadcast on Saturday nights at 9:00 PM. 24 Frames is a show that goes behind the scenes of the art, music, and entertainment in Texas.

All performances are available streaming online at Kabletowava’s Vimeo page a few weeks after each one airs on Television, unless it is a digital only release. Full 24 Frames episodes are available at KTTZ’s Youtube page.

Starting tomorrow The Blue Light Live, in the depot district will be starting a new program to reward songwriters who faithfully attend our live performances during songwriter nights.

We will be offering opening acoustic slots at our live music nightclub from 9:00pm-10:00pm for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for our songwriter night attendees.

So, for this week you could potentially open for:

Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. At 13, Judy Collins made her public debut performing Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy’s love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love with the guitar.

Judy Collins, who will perform at the Texas Teck Allen Theater released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22 and began a thirty-five year association with Jac Holzman and Elektra Records. She interpreted the songs of fellow artists - particularly the social poets of the time such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton. Judy was instrumental in bringing other singer-songwriters to a wider audience including poet/musician Leonard Cohen – and musicians Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman.

Judy Collins is also noted for her rendition of Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” on her 1967 album, Wildflowers which has since been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Winning "Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards was Judy's version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical “A Little Night Music.” Judy has continued an impressive musical career with an extensive catalog from every decade throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and up to the present.

On July 27, 2010, Collectors’ Choice Music will reissue (digitally remastered) nine CDs of Collins’ Elektra titles: Fifth Album (1965), In My Life (1966), Whales & Nightingales (1970), True Stories & Other Dreams (1973), Bread & Roses (1976), Running for My Life (1980), Times of Our Lives (1982), Home Again (1984) and Christmas at the Biltmore (1997). These albums contain newly commissioned liner notes by Ritchie Unterberger that include interviews with Collins.

Judy has authored several books, including the inspirational memoir Sanity & Grace, focusing on the death of her only son and the healing process following the tragedy; it speaks to all who have endured the sorrow of losing a loved one before their time. She is also co-director, with Jill Godmillow, of an Academy Award-nominated film about Antonia Brico, the first woman to conduct major symphonies around the world—and Judy's classical piano teacher when she was young.

In 1999, Judy founded her own record label, Wildflower Records - a grass roots artist driven label committedtonurturing fresh talent. The aim of the label is to develop long-term relationships with artists and their representatives in a way that Judy’s own career was nurtured by major labels. Barrie’s 1904 play “Peter Pan,” and his later novelization of it, will be staged as a Lubbock Moonlight Musicals production at 8 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Amphitheater at Mackenzie Park. The music is mostly by Mark Charlap, with additional music by Jule Styne. Most lyrics are by Carolyn Leigh; additional lyrics are by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In this production, Rachel Biggs and Sarah Mondle are double cast as Peter Pan. The role of Wendy also is double cast, played by Kathleen Langford and Madeleine St. Clair. Looking ahead, this summer's season of Lubbock Moonlight Musicals has been confirmed:

June 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29, “Peter Pan”

A musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play “Peter Pan,” and his later novelization of it, will be staged as a Lubbock Moonlight Musicals production at 8 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Amphitheater at Mackenzie Park.

The music is mostly by Mark Charlap, with additional music by Jule Styne. Most lyrics are by Carolyn Leigh; additional lyrics are by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

In this production, Rachel Biggs and Sarah Mondle are double cast as Peter Pan. The role of Wendy also is double cast, played by Kathleen Langford and Madeleine St. Clair.

A new album has been released by Lubbock Independent Alternative muisc talent Lindsay Boreing.

Amusement Park Recording studio just finished mixing and the album art. The vocal tracks were laid by producer Scott Faris. A music video (as seen on LNO's home videopage) has also been produced by Amusement Park's video division.

Featured entertainers are Mike Pritchard & the Ogallala Blues Band, Lost Weekend and Sons of the Roadhouse Playboys. Tommy and Charlene Hancock also will make an appearance.

The following people will be inducted at 5:30 p.m. into the West Texas Walk of Fame, near the statue of Buddy Holly located west of the Buddy Holly Center, 1801 Crickets Ave.: the late Jesse â��Guitarâ�� Taylor; Austin-based music producer Lloyd Maines; and Tommy and Charlene (Condray) Hancock, the godfather of West Texas music and his wife.

This will be followed at 6:30 p.m. by a ribbon-cutting for the boyhood home of Cricket Jerry â��J.I. Allison, as the house is re-situated on the grounds of the Buddy Holly Center.

Local independent television producers have reached an agreement to produce a television pilot featuring local Lubbock musician Talent. Impact productions in association with Multimedia Southwest have agreed to produce the 30 minute pilot. That pilot will be presented to local TV stations for an airing agreement. The concept is much like an Austin City Limits production, and will be taped at local Lubbock Venue, Brady's Great BBQ. Producers say that the owner of Brady's Great BBQ has gone to extreme measures to build the right stage for television production. A Spokesperson for the production companies expects to have the pilot completed in 4 weeks.

03/09/2026 - Texas Music Mourns The Loss of Legendary Bugs Henderson

According to the Dallas Morning News, Local blues guitar legend Bugs Henderson, the legendary blues-rocker died Thursday night from complications of liver cancer. He was 69. According to the article, Henderson's death at his home in Jefferson, Texas comes a mere four days after a huge benefit with a slew of well-known musicians was held at Palladium Ballroom to raise money for his medical expenses. Henderson had no health insurance and the cost of his care was mounting. Henderson did not attend that Palladium benefit because he was at home under hospice care. Bugs played with guitar icons such as B.B. King, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Ted Nugent, Roy Buchanan, and James Burton. To this day, Bugs' guitar hangs in Hard Rock Cafe' in Dallas along side instruments donated by Lee Ritenouer and Chet Atkins. Bugs' signature sound begain to define itself during the 1970s with the blues. Quoting Bugs, "Blues was all that mattered to me; no other music was worth a damn." One of Lubbock's young and rising musical talents, Tori Vasquez literally packed the house Friday night. She performed in one of a series of house concerts hosted by Paul Johnson and www.HubCityMusic.com. The living room setting specious enough for about 3 dozen people allowed for an intimate musical experience with the young vocalist accompanied by Mica Vasquez on guitar.
Tori Vasquez is the daughter of Lubbock's well known musical performer JR. Vasquez. Her unique talent and style has allowed her to be invited to song writing contests in New York and has had talks with a couple of record labels.

The Conorado High School class of 79 will be honoring Donny Allison for his contributions to Lubbock Music. The Presentation is scheduled for July 22, from 10 am to 1:00pm at the Buddy Holly Statue on 19th Street, accross from the Buddy Holly Center.

A short presentation honoring Allison will be held with a presentation to Don Caldwell and the Cactus Theatre, where Donnie often played. The ceremony will end with CHS representative Dana Rickerson Sparks, presenting a commemorative item created by fellow classmate, kyle Pettit.

All CHS exes are invited to attend as well as Allison's family, friends, and fans.

The UMC Early Settlers Luncheon takes place at Broadway Church of Christ 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Due to the ban on fireworks in Lubbock County, the plains Capital Evening Concert and Gandy's Fireworks Extravaganza are canceled for 2011 and will return in 2012.

The Original Caprock Cafe, the City's first smoking sports grill after a voted smoke ban, is going smoke-free July 5, according to an article in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal.
Due to its status as a bar and grill the 34th street location had been allowed to offer smoking even though it was a restaurant. Non- Smoking dining was offered during the lunch hours, now all ashtrays will be eliminated and the restaurant is going through a renovation process to remove any evidence of the past smoking.

06/20/2011 - Josh Abbot Band did not disappoint 4,000 fans at Lone Star Amphitheater

Idalou native Josh Abbot came home and his enthusiasm and adrenaline was high as apple pie. The boisterous crowd was testimony to that. Various bands contributed by performing for the first ever JAB Fest at the Lone Star Amphitheater. The music continued till midnight. Other participants throughout the day were Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Whiskey Myers, the William Clark Green Band, Charlie Schafter & The Gnomes and Daniel Markham.

LubbockNightOut.com has grown in the first year of existence. We started day one and had two visitors to the site. With some great people working hard and spreading the word, we have grown to have thousands of page views!

We pride ourselves on constantly keeping you informed of what is happening with Lubbock Nightlife. We also wanted to provide a one stop source for you to find restaurants, bars, bands, and events.

When we began building the site we couldn't believe how much there was to do in Lubbock! We have had some nights where there were literally 50 or 60 events going on. From live music, to the First Friday Art Trail, to Fourth on Broadway, we want to make sure it gets on our calendar.

I would like to thank everyone for all of the support we have received. We spend each day trying to make LubbockNightOut.com the most comprehensive website in West Texas!

Since the Buddy Holly era, Lubbock has been a meca of musical talent! We want LubbockNightOut.com to continue that tradition of developing West Texas artists!

There are two ways we are able to accomplish this. First, bands can build a profile to highlight their music. Once bands build their profile, which takes all of ten minutes, they can add their gigs to our event calendar. In their profile they can post pictures, links to external websites, and mp3 files of their songs.

Second, bands can upload their music to LubbockNightOut Radio! There is no cost to the bands at all! Once their music is uploaded we then add them to our playlists! LubbockNightOut Radio is part of a local feed that is apart of a nationwide group. Bands can get exposure both with local listeners and listeners from throughout the country.

When I moved to Lubbock two years ago I did not realize the treasure we have here. We have great venues that provide an awesome atmosphere to hear some great music. While living in New York City I was exposed to the live music scene. While New York has some great venues, few have the eclectic feel of Lubbock, Texas.
